ICEbricks

Sound from another dimension

ICEbricks are super compact Class D amplifier modules boosting some of the same characteristics as ICEpower’s other amplifier modules: High audio quality, low power loss, small size, robustness, flexibility, and long product life. They are capable of delivering 400 Wrms into 4 Ω or up to 300 Wrms into 8 Ω. ICEbricks are based on the Sierra modulation design, which allows for constant loop gain in the audio band while still maintaining a first order closed loop response.

ICEbricks – when the going gets tough

The ICEbrick amplifier modules displays very low output impedance of less than 2 mΩ in the audio band. Besides no heat sink is needed for playing music in 45 °C ambient, and it is also straightforward to add heat sinking and achieve higher continuous output powers. No components on the ICEbrick amplifier module ages significantly. Instead, the product life depends on choice of components surrounding the module.

Where is it used?

The versatility and compact size of the ICEbricks means they can be used everywhere where great audio is required. This includes stereo hifi applications, multi-channel amplifiers for home theaters or custom installations, as well as professional audio speakers and studio monitors.

Motherboard-1

The Motherboard-1 is a reference design which allows customers to easily evaluate and design with the ICEbricks. Motherboard-1 houses two Engine-400, one AUX-plant, storage capacitors, supervision, balanced input buffers and connectors to connect it to a +/- DC-source. It is the fastest and most convenient way of testing the performance of a system built on ICEbricks products. The schematic, BOM and layout files of Motherboard-1 is available for download from our extranet. This provides a convenient and well tested starting point for creating designs based on the Engine-400 and Aux-plant.

Engine-400

We set out to make what we believe you, as a customer, will value. High audio quality, low losses, small size, robustness, flexibility and long life. With our Sierra loop-design we manage to keep the distortion at a very low level throughout the audio band, and at the same time maintaining a first-order characteristic with -3 dB at 100 kHz giving very low phase shift at 20 kHz. The output impedance of Engine-400 has been verified to just a few milliohms in the audio band, and the noise is less than 30 uVrms giving a dynamic range of 1.3 million times or 122 dB. Engine-400 uses the high-density multilayer PCB as heat sink thereby keeping the building height down. Low impedance connections to your PCB is provided through massive, gold plated, copper tellurium pins. As a customer, you select which electrolytics, filter capacitors, VA+/- and VDR regulators you prefer to use. You are also free to handle the alarms that is sent out from Engine-400 in the way you wish. This provides you with the maximum design freedom without having to deal with complex switch mode electronics design.

AUX-plant

The AUX-plant is the first of ICEbricks power plants, and it is built on the same concept as the Engine-400 – i.e. using the multilayer PCB as both heat sink, but here also as inductor winding. It is very versatile in that the VA+/- outputs can be referenced to whatever supply rail you wish (usually GND in a single ended amplifier and or VS- in a single supply full bridge). VA+ can deliver more than 1 A and if paralleled with VDR, up to 1.5 A at +15 V. The output voltages can also be trimmed with an external resistor in the range between 10-15V. The control loop on the AUX-plant has been built discretely with a matched differential pair in order to maintain a low noise behavior (approximately 30 uVrms) even at low powers down to below 1 W. There is also no integrator in the loop which means it starts nicely without overshoots. The outputs can handle a large span of capacitance so you are free to experiment. The AUX-plant can provide enough auxillary power to drive up to 16 Engine 400 amplifier modules.
